CALBLOCK-PV-035: External straylight check

Observation configuration file

Scheduling

Once, during PV phase.

In case of failure, repeat at next possible opportunity.

Time-critical

Yes. Must be executed as soon as possible in PV (at least part 1). Otherwise, a compliant survey cannot be built in time anymore.

Dependencies

None.

Objective

The objective of these observations is to fine-sample the AA/SAA parameter space to identify a parameter range that offers suitably dark conditions for survey operations. We need to test VIS both in the open and closed shutter position, as well as NISP. The least complicated way of achieving this is through the ROS_D1, for parts 1-3. To save time, for parts 4-5 we observe VIS darks only, and without bright-star check, hence no NISP observations.

Observations

Observation instructions 52: Part 1: Quick AA fine-sampling
SAA = 95
for AA in [-3.7, ..., -2.5] in steps of 0.1:
   Take ROS_D1
Observation instructions 53: Part 2: Mapping the borders at AA=7.5, and near AA=-3
for SAA in [90, ..., 120] in steps of 5:
   for AA = -7.5 and AA in [-3.75, ..., -2.5] in steps of 0.25:
      Take ROS_D1
Observation instructions 54: Part 3: Mapping the lowest AA border
for SAA in [90, ..., 120] in steps of 5:
   for AA in [-8.9, -8.5, -8.0]:
      Take ROS_D1
Observation instructions 55: Part 4: Fine-sampling the straylight leak at AA around 90
for AA in [-8.6, -7.1]:
   for SAA in [87.5, 88.0, 88.5, 89.0, 89.25, 89.5, 89.75, 90.0] and
       SAA in [90.25, 90.5, 90.75, 91.0, 91.5, 92.0, 92.5]:
Take a single 325s VIS dark

Repeat the AA=-7.1, SAA=90 position, with the spacecraft rotated 180 degrees
   around its x-axis (Sun direction).
Take a single 325s VIS dark.
Table 70: Part 5: Wide sampling of the good SAA/AA space. Take a single 325s VIS dark.

Targets and pointing constraints

Pointing: AA and SAA constraints are given in the observations. The associated RA/Dec coordinates are time-dependent and will be computed once the observation date has been fixed.

Instrument configuration

Instrument: Wide survey

Inter-operability constraints

None.

Part 1: 3.6 h (11 ROS_D1)

Part 2: 13.9 h (42 ROS_D1)

Part 3: 7.0 h (21 ROS_D1)

Part 4: 6.5 h (31 darks, including a 180 degree slew)

Part 5: 17.1 h (88 darks)

Data volume

Part 1: 14333 MB

Part 2: 54726 MB

Part 3: 27363 MB

Part 4: 10013 MB (323 MB per dark)

Part 5: 28428 MB (323 MB per dark)

Processing input

Ground Processing Input Data: 11 and 42 VIS nominal science exposures, VIS 325s darks, NISP images in each filter, and NISP spectra (can be ignored)

Data Description:

Processing method

After overscan, bias, and gain correction, determine binned 2D straylight maps as in commissioning, for best comparison and merging with existing measurements.

Processing output

A map of background levels in the AA/SAA space, with improved sampling density, building on the commissioning products.

Processing tools

Single-frame processing including overscan, bias, and gain correction as in commissioning, for maximum comparability.

Recovery

A repetition of the observations is only foreseen in case of a technical issues during the observation sequence.
