CHAR-TEL-002: PLM contamination

Parent requirement

Objective

Contamination by volatile water ice will lead to a number of effects in the spectrophotometric data from absorption, interference and scattering. These can - in principle - be used to infer the conmtamination states of the telescope and instruments, i.e. the amount of water ice on a surface.

While the physical principles are known, the absolute amount of contamination of an optical element (or group of elements) will be difficult to determine in flight. Using a suitable combination of measurements with both instruments, it might be possible to constrain contamination to specific components, helping to fine-tune a decontamination procedure.
